Burgkmaierstraße 18-20, Augsburg

The narrow terraced houses on Burgkmaierstraße in Augsburg were built in 1905 according to plans by Walter Kraus and Hermann Dürr.

Facades

The three-story buildings with gable roofs have facades structured with plaster elements and sparse Art Nouveau decorations.

They blend seamlessly with the other houses on Burgkmaierstraße and are connected by uniform garden grilles.

The grilles and façade elements are decorated with geometric Art Nouveau forms.

Art Nouveau

Characteristic of Art Nouveau architecture are facade decorations with imaginative shapes and lines inspired by nature or non-European models.

The spectrum ranges from curved floral forms to geometric patterns.

Art Nouveau architecture is also characterized by emphasized asymmetry, diversity of materials, and colorfulness. The goal was to combine art and craftsmanship to create a Gesamtkunstwerk and bring art and beauty into everyday life.

Walter Krauss and Hermann Dürr

These architects ran a joint office in Augsburg.

They designed and built many structures in Augsburg, including tenements on Beethovenstraße, the Hesselberg Villa at the intersection of Schäzlerstraße and Frölichstraße, the Dillmann House at the intersection of Gutenbergstraße and Frölichstraße, a tenement at Schießgrabenstraße 4, and the Königsbau at the entrance to Bürgermeister-Fischer-Straße.

Augsburg architect and building contractor Sebastian Buchegger worked at Krauss & Dürr before starting his own business.
